African Penguin populations have crashed by more than 90%, and there is a very real danger of them going extinct on the West Coast of South Africa by 2035.
These dramatic declines are due to a shortage of the penguins’ favourite prey (anchovy and sardine) which is linked to competition with fisheries and climate change. Expanding maritime industries and heavy predation pressure have further added to the threats faced by this iconic species.
BirdLife South Africa is doing all it can to help these charismatic birds by advocating for fishing closures around the few remaining breeding colonies, and are pioneering the establishment of new penguin colonies on the south coast of South Africa.
