THRIVE is a hands-on, science-grounded tabletop strategy game for all ages, in which players build physically stacked trophic pyramids using 59 custom cubes, each one representing a real species from the Southern African grassland and bushveld ecosystem.

Learning happens naturally through play. Every cube face tells a story: three faces show life cycle stages or habits, one face reveals habitat and taxonomy, the bottom face shows what the creature eats, and the top face shows what eats it. Everything is colour coded, so players of any age quickly discover how food chains connect simply by matching colours. Young children absorb the concepts visually and intuitively, while older players and adults engage with the deeper ecological strategy beneath.

THRIVE scales beautifully across ages and experience levels. A five-year-old can play independently, building their own pyramid by matching colours. A secondary school student engages with species relationships and ecosystem dynamics. An adult discovers just how fragile and complex a real ecosystem truly is. The same 59 cubes serve them all.

The outcome events bring tangible, realistic consequences to every round, allowing players to absorb the real threats ecosystems face and understand what it truly takes for nature to thrive. Whether it is a parent exploring the blocks with a young child, a teacher running a Life Sciences lesson, or a group of friends competing for the highest scoring pyramid, THRIVE meets every player where they are.

Grounded in Real Science

Every species, feeding relationship, and ecological score in THRIVE is drawn from scientific data on Southern African biodiversity. Specialist feeders require exact prey species at advanced level, while beginners work with colour and category matching that is still ecologically accurate. Fire ecology, bush encroachment, pollinator collapse, and the cascading effects of invasive alien plants are all represented with precision.

THRIVE was designed to ensure that players of all ages walk away with an accurate, lasting understanding of how ecosystems really work, gained not through study but through play.

The Story Behind THRIVE

THRIVE was created by Dr Lynn Katsoulis, born from more than ten years of teaching food pyramids through play at Happy Acres, a children’s environmental field centre. What began as simple demonstrations of the impact humans have on ecosystems was continuously refined and tested through countless iterations with real children and educators, evolving into the versatile, scientifically rigorous, and genuinely exciting game it is today.

The result is a game that does not feel like learning because the learning never stops.
